Dance performance at "Souls of NYC Chinatown" art exhibition

We are honored to have Chen Dance perform an excerpt from ’Mott Street’ called Needle & Thread based on oral histories of garment factory workers. It is choreographed by H.T. Chen and music is by Charlie Chin.

This art exhibition celebrated H.T. Chen and his wife Dian Dong for their lifetime dedication to serving the Asian-American community and the New York City dance community. Its school and performance space at 70 Mulberry since 1979 has provided moving experiences in Asian-American history through contemporary dance, artistic creation, arts education, and presentation. It is one of the “Diverse Arts Spaces” supported by the Ford Foundation and was bestowed the 2002 New York State Governor’s Award for Artistic Excellence and Outstanding Contribution to Communities and the 2009 NYC Mayor’s Award for Arts & Culture.

Unfortunately, in January 2020, 70 Mulberry suffered a devastating fire that burned down the building. Chen Dance is currently without a physical home.
