About this Event
Join us for the Dance Party NYC: One day, five boroughs, more than 80 venues across the city—Dance Party NYC is a joyous, citywide festival of music and movement! At the Goethe-Institut New York, we’re celebrating techno music in all its transatlantic incarnations, from Detroit to Berlin to New York—stop by 30 Irving Pl and dance with us to music journalist Heiko Hoffmann’s techno track list on August 6th.
As part of the TECHNO WORLDS exhibition, we’re launching a listening session created by music journalist Heiko Hoffmann—a curated track list that covers the history of 1980s and ‘90s techno, from its Detroit roots to its European adaptations. The track list is accompanied by a written history of the transatlantic interplay between the era’s techno capitals.
Techno began in 1980s Detroit and spread rapidly across the world alongside the vast technological and digital advancements of the late twentieth century. In Germany, after the political upheavals associated with the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989-‘90, techno initiated a cultural reunification of former East and West. Beyond its Detroit and Berlin roots, techno has been reinterpreted and reinvented over the years in a variety of cities and subcultures.
TECHNO WORLDS takes an interdisciplinary approach to these diverse techno movements, featuring a selection of artworks by visual artists and musicians from a multitude of scenes, genres, and subcultural-political projects, spanning a range of eras and geographic locations.
