Your Topic:

Dance: Culture, Community and the Power of Movement

What is dance? Who dances in Australia? What does the act of dancing mean? I present three vignettes about amateur social dance of several different kinds in Australia, showing how dance can act in ways we may not expect: as a symbol of broader social change, a social lubricant, an agent of political activism and an expression of cultural identity.

Your Speaker: Dr. Jeanette Mollenhauer

Dr. Jeanette Mollenhauer researches social dance practices, especially exploring the significance of traditional dance among immigrant communities in Australia. She has published two books as well as academic book chapters and journal articles, and has lectured in the UK, USA and Europe. She is also a recreational folk dance teacher and serves on the National Committee of Folk Dance Australia.
