Contemporary dance company Teddy Shouldn’t Smoke returns to WORM! We’ve been supporting choreographer Marijke de Vos over the past few years, and continue to do so with her latest creation. Fans will remember Black Dog, Seven Years, Solid Maybe and WORK is a four letter word. If it’s new to you, welcome to jump on the train! Teddy Shouldn’t Smoke stands for accessible performances with live music and collaborations with visual artists. Together they make (often) taboo subjects, on the dark side of your psyche, physical.
Body of Goodbyes goes in search of comfort and love for your body.
Choreographer and dancer Marijke de Vos knows better than anyone else that you only have one body, and you should take care of it. That’s why she decided to make Body of Goodbyes with her collective Teddy Shouldn’t Smoke. In it, De Vos and musician Laura Nygren (Show Pony) ask the question: why aren’t we kinder to our bodies? We all age, and especially for dancers and other people who work with their bodies, this is sometimes a difficult realization.
Dancers, as well as top athletes and other artists, usually, barring Keith Richards, cannot continue to do their work at the same level all their lives, because sooner or later the body protests. But the same goes for, say, pavers or construction
workers. And even the most boring office job or the most enjoyable hobby often cannot be kept up until you are 90. Body of Goodbyes links this theme to today’s performance culture: we always want more and better, but when and how does this come at the expense of our bodies?
In this performance, through the combination of dance , live music and scenography, you
will be completely immersed in another world: that of the body, and how to deal with it.
Body of Goodbyes takes you on a journey from a difficult attitude with your body, full of
conflict, to acceptance and caring. A warm bath with a tough message: be kind to yourself,
before it’s too late.

Barend Elias is a dancer and choreographer from Leiden. He is visually and hearing impaired, but that does not hinder him. He has been dancing with passion since he was young. In 2023 he graduated from the dance education PACT+ Dance at the ROC of Amsterdam. During and after his education he danced in works by Aminata Cairo, ReDisCoverMe, MAREA and Achterdeberg Productions. He recently started training and residency at dance company Misiconi.
This short performance was created by Barend Elias in the context of the talent development program Teddy’s Talents.
In the fall of 2023, Teddy Shouldn’t Smoke launched the first edition of a talent development program for alumni of MBO performing arts courses. In this program, they guide several young makers in developing a performance concept and project plan. One of these makers eventually realizes their plan into a short performance of 20 minutes and goes on tour with Body of Goodbyes as a supporting act in the 2024-2025 season.
Monday morning rush hour. A busy station and a busy metro. There is little space and the blind man mows everyone down. Suddenly the metro stops underground… All the alarm bells go off and no one knows what to do. Several people, each with their own disability, fight through this thin tunnel of chaos. Who has an eye for the other?

Waarom zijn we zo hard voor ons lichaam?
De dansvoorstelling Body of Goodbyes gaat op zoek naar troost en liefde voor je lijf. Choreograaf en danser Marijke de Vos weet als geen ander dat je maar één lichaam hebt, en daar moet je zuinig op zijn. Daarom stelde ze met haar collectief Teddy Shouldn’ Smoke en muzikant Laura Nygren (Show Pony) de vraag: waarom zijn we niet wat liever voor ons lijf? We worden allemaal ouder, en zeker voor dansers en andere mensen die met hun lichaam werken, is dat soms een lastig besef. Dansers, maar ook topsporters en andere artiesten kunnen meestal, Keith Richards daargelaten, niet hun hele leven op hetzelfde niveau hun werk blijven doen, omdat vroeg of laat het lichaam protesteert. Maar datzelfde geldt ook voor
bijvoorbeeld stratenmakers of bouwvakkers. En zelfs de meest saaie kantoorbaan of de leukste hobby is vaak niet tot je 90e vol te houden. Body of goodbyes koppelt dit thema aan de hedendaagse prestatiecultuur: we willen altijd maar meer en beter, maar wanneer en hoe gaat dit ten koste van ons lichaam? In deze voorstelling word je door de combinatie van dans , live-muziek en scenografie volledig ondergedompeld in een andere wereld: die van het lichaam, en hoe je daarmee omgaat. Body of Goodbyes neemt je mee op een reis die van een moeilijke houding met je lichaam, vol conflict, uiteindelijk naar acceptatie en zorgzaamheid voert. Een warm bad met een harde boodschap: wees lief voor jezelf, voordat het te laat is.
Deze voorstelling wordt voorafgegaan door een kort voorprogramma van Barend Elias. Hij is slechtziend en slechthorend, maar dat zit hem niet in de weg. Van jongs af aan danst hij met passie. In 2023 is hij afgestudeerd aan de dansopleiding PACT+ Dans aan het ROC van Amsterdam. Tijdens en na zijn opleiding heeft hij onder andere gedanst in werk van Aminata Cairo, ReDisCoverMe, MAREA en Achterdeberg Producties. Hij is recent begonnen met training en residentie bij dansgezelschap Misiconi. Zijn performance van 20 minuten kaders in het talentontwikkelingsprogramma Teddy’s Talents dat in 2023 is opgericht door Teddy Shouldn’t Smoke voor alumni van MBO podiumkunstopleidingen. Hierin begeleiden ze verschillende jonge makers bij het ontwikkelen van een voorstellingsconcept en projectplan.
