On Friday, May 3, 2024 at 8:00pm, Tom's Place presents
Damon Smith (double bass)
with
Karen Stackpole (gongs)
and
Thea Farhadian (violin)
Contrabass player and former Oakland Resident Damon Smith (now of Saint Louis) will be back in the Bay Area for the first time in a long time, and will play at Tom's Place with local stalwarts Karen Stackpole, on her beautifully sonorous array of gongs and Thea Farhadian, violinist extraordinaire. He wants me to mention that he has just released a CD with with Jason Stein, Marilyn Crispell & Adam Shead (none of whom will be here, unfortunately!) and will have copies with him.
I feel like Damon is such an old friend that I fiel he needs no introduction, but it's been 13 years since he vacated the Bay Area for stints in Houston, Boston and now Saint Louis, so let me say this: I think of him largely as a colorist, squeezing every possible sound out of the double bass. He will tell you that he draws influences from American avant-garde and European free improvisation, and always looks toward film, visual art and dance for inspiration.
Karen Stackpole brings a lot of stuff to a gig: gongs, cymbals, tibetan bowls, Thai tuned gongs, wind-up toys, music boxes, metal rods, weird spinny cymbals and more. She plays them with bows, mallets, chains and bare hands, creating a dense broadband soundscape that echoes nature's large and small gestures: thunderstorms and insect calls, crashing waves and gulls calling, earthquakes and trees leaves blowing in the wind, vulcanism and hummingbird thrums.
Thea divides her time between the Bay Area and Berlin. We're lucky when she's in town because we always love to hear her unique, lyrical voice on the instrument. Her projects include solo violin and interactive electronics, acoustic improvisation, solo laptop, radio art, and video. Tonight she will be playing just the violin.
COVID still hasn't gone away, so we have to make some accomodations to it. Seating will be strictly limited -- we may have to turn you away if we fill our (reduced) capacity. You must be vaccinated against COVID, and you must wear a mask while on the premises. We won't have any snacks, because it seems to me like that's incompatible with masking.
