DAM WRIGHT'S HOMELESSNESS HISTORY OF MANCHESTER:From Amoskeag to Armageddon...
Date: Saturday December 10th: 4:30PM-6:30PM
Suggested Donation: $40
***This is a brief "walking tour" of the history of how we went from a city that once helped our homeless neighbors, to a city which now harms them all.***
AGENDA
Northern Sidewalk at Veteran's Park - This sidewalk was once an encampment area for over 30 homeless neighbors. Learn what it was actually like to live like they did. Hear about the years of encampment sweeps which forced people onto that sidewalk. Including the veterans who had to live outside of "Veteran's Park". As well as the new series of increasingly harsh and targeted "park rules" which eventually forced them to entirely abandon this space.
Hillsborough County Courthouse -
See the aftermath of what happened when our homeless neighbors decided to make a stand on the lawn of this public building. This was the site of one of the largest protests for homelessness rights that our state has ever seen. In an area which you can now see is completely fenced off, and almost entirely unused.
Manchester's "Old Police Station" -
Stand on the steps in the very spot of one of the most graphically violent and utterly senseless recent deaths throughout the entire homeless community. When a man with untreated and severe mental illness shot an old man in the head, while that man's best friend was standing right next to him. Heard from someone who was working that day, at that location, when it was being used as an emergency winter shelter.
Pine Street at Manchester Street -
Watch from a block away as the 139 residents of an overpacked shelter are forced outside for 30 minutes, regardless of weather. In conjunction with the dozens and dozens of people who are forced to live outside of that shelter, on the sidewalks, all day and all night. With no end in sight, and diminishing hopes of whether they might be able to make it through for just one more day.
City Hall Plaza - Stand between the building where local officials made all of the decisions which led to this, and the tallest building in New Hampshire. Which overlooks every spot on the tour, and bares the name of a successful local land baron. As we discuss how the collaborations between local government and wealthy land owners/developers is the real source of all the problems that everyone in this city is now having with the impacts of rampant local homelessness.
All followed by a Q&A session for anyone who wants to learn even more!
Limited space is available. Please reach out to reserve your tickets in advance. Any additional tickets will be available for purchase on the day of the tour, and on a first come first serve basis. Please feel free to inquire last minute if you would like to find out how many openings are still available. If interest is high then additional dates will be offered as well.
