Dabke Class Series with Thowra Dabke at AANM (July 2026)

NEW ADDITION! Arab drumming classes are every Tuesday at 8pm. The class teaches the proper technique and many of the common rhythms on the tabil, derbake/tabla, daf, or riq. If you don't have your own drum, a limited number of tabil and derbake drums will be available to rent for $5 per class. Registration is required in advance.

Introducing a new consolidated 8 week dabke dance curriculum for youth and teens/adults!

Classes for youth ages 6-12 are on Mondays starting July 6th.

Mixed teen and adult classes for ages 13+ are every Tuesday starting July 7th. Each level will include learning unique choreography to get students more comfortable with the steps. Freestyle dabke will still be the main focus of the classes.

NOTE: Location TBD for the 3rd and 4th weeks in July

The Tuesday series will be taught by Ayman, the director, choreographer, and trainer of the Thowra Dabke Troupe. The two most common types of Levantine dabke will be taught; 12-count (2 stomp) and 6-count (1 stomp). All classes are 1 hour long and are held in person at the Annex of the Arab American National Museum located at 13620 Michigan Ave, Dearborn, MI 48126.

In the beginner series you will learn the proper technique and all of the fundamentals with a few variations. This series is meant to allow one to follow along in a dabke line

In the experienced series you will learn more complex steps and timing, combining multiple moves together. This series is meant for one to be able to lead a dabke line and having the tools to be able to join a dabke team. All classes build on the previous one.

Kids (ages 12 and under) classes will be held on Mondays July 6, 13, 20, 27

5:00-5:45pm: Beginner

5:45-6:30pm: Experienced

Mixed gender teen/adult classes will be held on Tuesdays July 7, 14, 21, 28

6:00-7:00pm: Beginner Dabke Dance

7:00-8:00pm: Experienced Dabke Dance

8:00-9:00pm: Arab Style Drumming

The costs:

$70 for an individual for all 4 classes in a series

$20 for one class, it'll be an additional fee of $5 per class to rent a drum, bring your own to avoid the fee.

Payment can be made in person via cash, check, Zelle, Venmo, CashApp, or PayPal.

Only $15 each for previous students wanting to retake any of the classes.
