About this Event
Room: Director's Row E
Description: This workshop will provide participants with an introduction to dental data collection using Horos, a free, open-source software platform for medical imaging. Participants will learn how to collect commonly-utilized dental metrics (buccolingual and mesiodistal crown diameters, crown heights) and calculate estimated crown volume from CT files in the New Mexico Decedent Image Database (NMDID) using measurement tools within Horos. Participants will also learn how to conduct searches, request access, and download data from NMDID, a unique resource for anthropological research that contains whole body CT scans of over 15,000 individuals.
Workshop presenter: Dr. Cait McPherson. Before joining the St. Mary's College of Maryland Anthropology Department as a Visiting Assistant Professor, Cait McPherson earned a Ph.D. in biological anthropology from the University of Arizona. Her research tests aspects of the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) hypothesis in archaeological and modern research contexts by linking hard tissue indicators of developmental stress to patterns of growth, morbidity, and mortality across the lifecourse. Her current focus is identifying sensitive developmental windows (SDWs) in early dental and skeletal development that can provide researchers with information about an individual's early life interactions with their environment.
