Explore the beautiful photographic process of cyanotype to create your own cyan-blue prints.
About this Event

You will learn how to produce a set of cyanotypes where thin objects or acetates are placed directly onto specially-coated paper and then exposed to UV light. When these objects are removed and the paper is washed with water a blue image remains. You will also learn how to use a variety of effects called toning, intensifying and reducing which alters the blue-ness of the prints.

What experience do I need?

This course is suitable for beginners and anyone interested in simple photographic printing techniques. Those with previous experience of printmaking may wish to use the day to explore a new technique.

What will I make?

You’ll produce a set of beautiful and intriguing blue prints using found objects such as beads, buttons, lace, leaves etc, and/or your own acetate images/compositions. Expect to go home with at least 10-15 different A5 cyanotype prints onto paper which explore some of the different possibilities of the process.

Who is my tutor?

Joanna Wilkinson is a practising printmaker, illustrator and bookbinder. She uses printing, collage, analogue/slow photography and sometimes even old style colouring techniques like felt tips in her work. Joanna has recently completed an MA Creative Practice at Leeds Arts University and is also a Co-operative Member of Leeds Print Workshop. She has been working with us over the three years as a technician and tutor for printmaking and bookbinding. She has experience in teaching a wide variety of different groups of people including children and adults.

Do I need to bring anything?

A variety of papers to use and all the materials will be provided on the day. It will be useful to bring thin/small objects such as leaves, lace, threads, beads, buttons etc to experiment with. You'll also need to bring an apron along with you.

Accessibility

Our aim is to bring printmaking to as many people as possible. By their nature, some printmaking processes involve an amount of physical effort. Leeds Print Workshop is based in a basement studio at Patrick Studios, a bespoke venue for artists operated by East Street Arts. It is fully wheelchair accessible, with a lift, larger than standard doors and disabled toilet facilities. We recognise that everybody’s accessibility needs may differ, therefore please email us at [email protected] to discuss any concerns you may have before booking. There is one dedicated disabled car parking space to the side of the building on Rider Street.

Please note: we regret that, for safety reasons, only those over the age of 16 will be permitted to undertake the course.
