Cyanotype Workshop with Desert ArtLAB
About this Event
Join us for a cyanotype workshop at the museum! Led by exhibiting artists, April Bojorquez and Matthew Garcia of Desert ArtLAB, this intimate class explores the art of solar-powered printmaking. You will learn how to create unique sun prints using natural materials, everyday objects, or transparent film negatives. Core supplies will be provided, but we encourage you to bring your own botanical elements or objects to personalize your work. Space is limited!
Desert ArtLAB is an interdisciplinary environmental arts collaborative established in 2010. Their work promotes Indigenous/Chicano/a perspectives on ecological practice, food sovereignty, and self-determination. Desert ArtLAB’s projects activate public space through participatory artworks and support the restoration of desert environments and their foodways through zero irrigation regrowth projects.
About the Artists
April Bojorquez (b. 1981, Phoenix; lives and works in Pueblo, Colorado) is a Colorado-based Chicana artist, curator, folklorista and educator. As director of programs and food practice at Desert ArtLAB — a Chicanx-led environmental arts collaborative — Bojorquez guides participatory projects that restore desert ecologies through zero-irrigation regrowth and revitalize ancestral foodways rooted in the Chicanx experience of the desert Southwest.
Her work as a nationally recognized artist and cultural arts leader has been featured at institutions including the Museum of Contemporary Native Art in Santa Fe, Galería de la Raza in San Francisco, Dom Museum in Vienna, Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara and the New Mexico Museum of Art – Vladem Contemporary.
She is a Creative Capital Award recipient, a 2021 Mellon Artist in Residence at Colorado College Fine Arts Center Museum, a certified Colorado Change Leader, a CreativeWest National Art Futures Fellow, and an alumna of the Smithsonian Latino Museum Studies Program.
Bojorquez is dedicated to amplifying Chicanx/Indigenous/Latinx/Hispanic voices and cultural practices in the Southwest to inspire and shape future generations. She lives and works in Pueblo, Colorado.
Matthew Garcia (b. 1980, Southern Colorado; lives and works in Pueblo, Colorado) is an internationally recognized interdisciplinary Chicano artist and scholar whose work explores Indigenous/Chicanx perspectives on Land Art, ecological practices, food sovereignty, and self-determination. Garcia has exhibited his work nationally and internationally at venues such as the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, France; the Dom Museum in Vienna, Austria; the Museum of Contemporary Native Art in Santa Fe, NM; the Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara; and Galería de la Raza in San Francisco, CA, National HIspanic Cultural Center, Albuquerque, NM, among many others. He is a recipient of the Creative Capital award and the 2021 Mellon Artists in Residence at the Colorado College Fine Arts Center Museum. His work has been featured in numerous publications and books, including Artists Remaking Medicine (2023) and Digging Earth: Extractivism and Resistance on Indigenous Lands of the Americas (2024). Garcia is an Associate Professor of Art at Colorado State University Pueblo.
