Cyanotype workshop with Brian Ellis and the Gowanus Dredgers
About this Event
Join Brian Ellis and the Gowanus Dredgers for a mid-day cyanotype printmaking workshop! After a short discussion of the printmaking process, we will paddle to a nearby location to gather materials for our prints. Upon returning to the Bunker, we will set up and harvest the power of the sun to create some wonderful prints that participants will be able to take home the same day. Beyond the standard cyanotype process, we will also cover wet cyanotype, image transfer, and coffee-based bleaching and toning as time allows.
RSVP Required as seats are limited.
Cost: Suggested donation of $5-10, however no one turned away for lack of funds.
We want this to be accessible to everyone, please contact us if you have a financial hardship.
About the artist: Brian Ellis is a process-based cyanotype artist who uses the medium to explore human physicality and detritus. Using their practice to document meaning-making in the context of waste, degradation, and impermanence, Brian's cyanotype work utilizes wet cyanotype, singing, portraiture, interview, and print toning.
Weather (wind, waves or evidence of storm) may cancel programming with one hour advance notice. Meet at the Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club Bunker, 2 19 St, Brooklyn, (off of 3rd Ave.)
Getting there:
Our dock is located at the end of 19th St., off of 3rd Ave. past the Home Depot. You'll think you're going the wrong way - keep going until you get to the water, and you'll find us at the end of 19th across from FedEx. On street parking is available, but this is an industrial area, park at your own risk. If you're taking the train, the Prospect Ave. R is the closest station. 4th and 9th might be more useful (R, F & G). There are citibike docks on 3rd Ave at 17th st. and 23rd st. Personal bikes and bags can be locked in our canoe shed while we're out paddling.
What to bring:
Wear sunscreen and bring a bottle filled with water. Close-toed shoes are recommended, and wear clothing you don't mind potentially being splashed. Use a restroom before arrival, as we have limited facilities on-site.
