PhotoSC and the University of South Carolina’s School of Visual Art & Design (SVAD) invite photography enthusiasts, artists, students, and curious beginners to celebrate World Cyanotype Day with a hands-on workshop exploring one of photography’s earliest alternative processes.
The workshop will take place Saturday, September 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the photo darkrooms, Room 213 of USC’s McMaster College, 1615 Senate Street, Columbia, SC 29208.
Photographer, master printer and photography educator Brett Schenning will lead participants through the cyanotype process, exploring its history, chemistry, paper preparation, and exposure techniques. As a darkroom instructor and educator, Schenning brings extensive experience teaching traditional and alternative photographic processes.
During the one-day workshop, participants will learn about the history of cyanotypes, prepare light-sensitive materials, create photograms and contact prints, expose their work using ultraviolet light or sunlight, and process their finished prints. No previous photography experience is required.
By the end of the workshop, each participant will leave with a collection of original cyanotype prints and the knowledge and skills needed to continue exploring this historic alternative photographic process independently.
