Cyanotype on Ceramic
About this Event
Part art project and part science experiment, this hands-on workshop introduces you to the wonderful world of cyanotypes. You'll leave with two one-of-a-kind tiles that can be displayed and framed as handmade artwork, or used as unique coasters and conversation pieces. Mine Anil from Blue Fern Ceramics will teach you all you need to know!
What is a cyanotype?
A cyanotype is one of the earliest photographic printing processes. A light-sensitive solution is brushed onto a surface and develops into a brilliant cerulean blue when exposed to UV light. Wherever an object blocks the light, a crisp white silhouette is left behind, creating a beautiful botanical or object print.
*No sunlight is required for this class. We will be using a UV light for the entire process!
Each participant will have access to:
- Cyanotype solution
- Brush for application
- Access to a UV light
- Two ceramic tiles (both sides can be used)
- Unlimited cardstock to practice your designs and/or make greeting cards
- A selection of dried flowers to use on your project
*Small frames will also be available for purchase after class for $10.
You'll leave with two finished tiles, along with all of the cardstock prints created during the workshop.
If flowers and plants aren't your style, you're welcome to bring a small object (4" × 4" or smaller) to use instead. The object you choose will become the white silhouette in your design. Some ideas include:
- The key to your first home
- A family heirloom
- A favorite small figurine
Come experiment, create, and discover the magic of one of photography's oldest art forms!
