Die Cyanide Pills sind wahrscheinlich die tollste Band der Welt.... vier Alben, eine 10’’ Live Scheibe und 10 Singles nennen sie ihr eigen, die vierte Platte „Soundtrack to the new cold war“ erschien am 4.August 2023, natürlich wieder auf Damaged Goods. Ein neues Album ist gerade in Arbeit. Denkt an The Boys, Buzzcocks, The Briefs, Ramones und ihr wisst worauf es hier hinausläuft. Die weiße Lederjacke ist immer dabei, ebenso wie ihre bonbonfarbenen Sonnenbrillen. Diese coolen Typen spielen deine Lieblings Punkrocksongs, verpackt in Kaugummi und Zuckerwatte, mit einer sehr britisch schnoddrigen 1977er Punkattitüde, tief verwurzelt im Pubrock und Glam, und treiben das Songwriting zu totaler Perfektion. Sie singen über die gleichen sozialen Missstände in der Welt wie sie damals schon in den 1970ern herrschten. Und sie haben eine Menge Humor. Nichts ist ihnen zu ernst. Oder vielleicht ist es das doch? Die Cyanide Pills gründeten sich nachdem sich ein paar Kumpels, die bereits in Bands in der Leeds Punkszene umtriebig waren, entschieden, ihre Ressourcen zu sammeln und die Band zu gründen, in der sie schon immer sein wollten. Das war Mitte 2008. Damaged Goods Records London nahm die Band gleich unter ihre Fittiche und die Debut single ‘Break It Up’ wurde Anfang 2009 veröffentlicht. Ihr selftitled Debutalbum erblicke 2010 das Licht der Welt. Und der Rest ist Geschichte. Seitdem touren die Cyanide Pills mehrmals im Jahr durch Europa, veröffentlichen eine Single und Platte nach der nächsten, und jeder neue Song ist so wunderbar perfekt geschrieben, es ist schwer die Band nicht zu lieben. Sie nennen sich selbst eine Bande von nicht funktionierenden Außenseitern, die schweres Gepäck mit sich rum tragen und nicht vertrauenswürdige Loser sind. Aber sie machen einen großartigen Sound. Das ist das, was sie wirklich gut können!

THE 50 KAITENZ
If you think carefully about why Turbonegro, Guitar Wolf, The Dirtbombs, or even the entire Crypt Band catalog are of such authoritative relevance, it can all be traced back to two simple facts. Fact one. They understood their style of playing rock'n'roll. This realization sounds succinct at first, after all, any band would claim this. Only in reality most of them fail miserably. First copying others and then copying themselves is no innovation and just adds another copy to the meter records, no "most authentic" or original equipment helps, because it fails because of the songs. Fact two, and maybe this is the most underestimated factor, is the lack of humor. Without humor, you can't play good rock'n'roll.
Why am I writing this? I have seen the light, THE 50 KAITENZ from Osaka play 60s Punk as I wish it and that in a perfection that makes me dizzy. Alone the transitions from the chorus to the verse are so cleverly placed that you slap your thighs with joy, without being able to speak a single word of Japanese, you catch yourself intoning the songs loudly at an inappropriate room volume and even start to play the obligatory air guitar with pleasure.
THE 50 KAITENZ, of course, don't play pure 60s punk. Similar to Turbonegro, they have devoured 70 years of rock'n'roll history and, not to use the more appropriate word, use it shamelessly for their purposes. Punk, country, garage or beat - everything is scrutinized, distilled, stirred, shaken and stirred again to be unleashed on your auditory canals in irreverent perfection. I'm thrilled by all the tongue-in-cheek quotes, because what comes out of it is probably the most independent thing I've heard in the last few years in this hard-working field.
