About this Event
Unplug from the screen + use your hands = tell your own story.
Everyday we bombarded with targeted ads and algorithms that tell you what you should want, should be and should buy.
It's time to resist: Stop being a consumer. Start being a creator.
In this workshop, we will create a 8 page mini-zine.
Techniques:
- How to use a Receipt Printer and Typewriter
- Composition, Layering and Collage
- Storytelling techniques to tell your story in 8 pages
Suggested prompts (to free you from the tyranny of the blank page)
- Fears and Creativity in the face of AI
- Data Sovereignty
- What Hacking Means to You
Feel free to bring your own topic!
Workshop Structure:
-Demonstration of techniques
-Make-along
-Photocopy your finished zine
By the end of the workshop, you'll have an mini 8 page zine + photocopies you can share with friends and family!
Who is this for:
-Tech burnouts.
-Anyone who feels like they lost their creative spark years ago and wants to revive it.
-Anyone that wants to move from a consumer to creator.
What the class will provide:
- Magazines for collages, such as MAKE Magazine and 2600: The Hacker Quarterly
- Thermal printer and typewriter
- Coloring material (markers, crayons, pens, etc)
- Paper
What to Bring (optional):
- Your own collage material, such as old textbooks, receipts, and flyers
Your facilitator:
Mars Lee is a Technical Illustrator that makes byte-sized comics that explain technical topics. Their most recent works are the How to Contribute to NumPy’ comics: https://heyzine.com/flip-book/3e66a13901.html
They've given talks on the power of art in tech, such as the keynote at PyCon India and at PyData NYC.
This is a masks optional event.
