The discovery caused quite a stir: only a few years ago, a remarkable collection of magazines came to light created by Jewish writer Curt Bloch while in hiding from the Nazis. From the summer of 1943 until his liberation in the spring of 1945, Bloch produced and circulated a new issue every week.
The 96 small booklets, each with a cover decorated with his own collages, contain a total of 492 handwritten poems. Often satirical in tone, they commented on the events of the war, gave voice to the experience of a man in hiding, and provided both reflection and entertainment for members of the resistance in the Dutch city of Enschede.
This lecture will be presented by Thilo von Debschitz and Simone Bloch, Curt Bloch’s daughter. Poet Samuel Haecker will read a selection of Bloch’s poems. Each guest will receive a small gift at the end of the event.
This event is presented in partnership with the German Consulate General New York.
