CURRENTS, An Artist Conversation
About this Event
Keep the Conversation Flowing
In conjunction with the Philadelphia Sculptors exhibition, CURRENTS (on view through August 8) the artist discussion will enhance the experience of the exhibition by presenting a forum for the artists to engage with one another and share their stories about the creation of their works. The audience will learn of commonalities and differences in the artists’ perceptions of the historic Fairmount Water Works and the challenges of creating art in the haunting subterranean passages they helped bring back to life. Artists will discuss their works and influences, as well as the process of working together to create a cohesive exhibition. The panel will take place in the pool space in the heart of the exhibition, allowing attendees to be immersed in the repurposed space as they deepen their understanding of the concepts, research and new discoveries underpinning the artworks around them.
Hosted by curator and documentarian Conrad Benner (Founder of Streets Dept), participating artists are Joy Feasley and Paul Swenbeck, Carolyn Healy and John Phillips, Nadia Hironaka and Matthew Suib, Eugene Lew, Martha McDonald, and Taji Ra’oof Nahl.
Reception: 5:00 – 5:30.
Panel: 5:30 – 6:30.
About CURRENTS
CURRENTS is a multimedia art exhibition curated by Philadelphia Sculptors. Site-specific artworks delve into the history and ecology of the structure and its environs, reanimating the subterranean space around the former John B. Kelly Pool to address environmental and historical themes highlighting water, the river, and the site itself.
Ten prominent local artists will explore the hidden mysteries of the raw architecture and underground corridors beneath the National Historic Landmark, Fairmount Water Works. As America looks back on its 250th anniversary as a nation, visitors will experience multi-media installations that connect colonial times to both the real present and an imagined future, 250 years ahead.
Philadelphia Sculptors works to promote contemporary sculpture and expand public awareness of the role and value of sculpture through exhibitions, public forums, and educational outreach.
Curators: Elaine Crivelli, Leslie Kaufman and Marsha Moss.
