Curiosity. Compassion. Community.
Join PEN America NC Piedmont, College Park Baptist Church, Scuppernong Books, the Interactive Resource Center, and NC writers for a discussion on creating community across difference. This event is free, open to the public, and sponsored by PEN America NC Piedmont and College Park Baptist Church.
Join Joe Killian (The Assembly); Ashley Lumpkin (The Sad Stays), Annette Saunooke Clapsaddle - Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (Even As We Breathe), Mimi Herman (The Kudzu Queen), and Stacy McAnulty (Children's Author) will have a moderated conversation from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm.
The times we live in feel, to many, more polarized and divisive than ever – and not just because it’s an election year. During such hotly contested times, how do we find a sense of shared belonging? An examination of curiosity, compassion, and community — and how they manifest – written, spoken, and lived – might be a good place to start. North Carolina writers of different backgrounds explore these topics in conversation about how their life experiences and values shape and show up in their writing - and how they engage the world. The event will explore the question: what does moral imagination and moral courage look like in America today? How do we have conversations about these issues in the presence of disagreement?
Then, join the role-playing workshop from 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm
Greensboro Gazette Editorial Committee! (REGISTRATION REQUIRED FOR THE WORKSHOP)
Become part of the editorial team at a fictional newspaper where you have to write op-eds on hot button issues. You will have to use the op-ed to find an usual or unexpected angle (moral courage).
