"Pop after Pop: Art Around Us" brings together celebrated works from the Pop Art movement and key artworks from Southeast Asia, presenting new perspectives about one of the most influential artistic movements of the 20th century.
While acknowledging how the global Pop Art movement originated in Britain and quickly flourished in the United States, the exhibition explores how the movement circulated transnationally. Southeast Asian artists inflected familiar imagery drawn from mass media, advertising and life in their cities to address their own political realities, social changes and cultural contexts. By doing so, they actively reinterpreted the vocabulary of Pop by turning to Southeast Asian popular and vernacular culture in their practice.
In this curatorial roundtable, exhibition curators Dr Patrick Flores, Joleen Loh, and Alexis Chen will be joined by Joan Young (Senior Director, Curatorial Affairs, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York) to unpack the curatorial process behind the exhibition and institutional partnership. The conversation will consider diverse artistic responses to Pop, and reflect on the movement’s continuing global relevance.
