About this Event

Join Bemis Center’s Chief Curator and Director of Programs Rachel Adams for a lively and informative tour of Root of Two—the first major US exhibition by the sound artist and composer Maya Dunietz. Comprising eight sculptures and room-sized installations throughout Bemis Center’s four galleries, Dunietz composes a carefully orchestrated performance over a four-month period. This will be in-person only. No virtual stream.

At 3 PM, for those who register, Sound Microphones and Very Badminton with Crank Sturgeon, a sound workshop will take place. Noise artist Crank Sturgeon joins Bemis for a two-part session in aesthetics and athletics, guiding participants to construct their very own, fully operational piezo transducer microphone and then using those in a game of amplified badminton! About the Artist

Maya Dunietz is a composer, performer and sound artist, working in the uncommon space between music, visual art, technological research, philosophy, and performance. For the past thirty years, she has performed and exhibited widely internationally. Her compositions have been commissioned by renowned ensembles and performers including Saar Berger (Ensemble Modern), Meitar Ensemble, Bat Kol Choir, and the Hyperion Ensemble, among others. She was guest professor as the Schusterman Resident at CalArts and as a guest artist at the Cité internationale des arts. Some of her most important site-specific sound installations have been exhibited at the Centre Pompidou, Palais de Tokyo Paris, Arnolfini Gallery Bristol, Reykjavik Arts Festival, and the Jerusalem Botanical Gardens. Solo exhibitions include The Centre Pompidou, Frac Provence-AlpesCôte d’Azur, and Herzliya Museum of Contemporary art.

About the Curator

Rachel Adams began her role as Bemis Chief Curator and Director of Programs in 2018. She feels extremely lucky to oversee Bemis programming, working with artists-in-residence to give them time and space to create, and curating exhibitions and sound performances at LOW END. Rachel loves many aspects of her job but high on the list is connecting with people about art and sharing everything Bemis has to offer. She is inspired by studio visits with artists and the amazing spaces throughout the Bemis campus. When not at work, Rachel enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, hiking, cooking, reading, and exploring the Omaha area.
