In 1870, Ferd Heim, Sr. opened the first family brewery in St. Louis. By 1890, his sons had moved to Kansas City and opened The Ferd Heim Brewing Company in the East Bottoms, at the corner of Guinotte & Chestnut. When Prohibition was enacted in 1920, the Heims sold their breweries and began concentrating on other business ventures, such as Electric Park. In 2018, J. Rieger & Company converted the old bottling works to become their distillery, the first dedicated distillery in Kansas City since Prohibition.
