Step into a remarkable story of resilience, landscape and community, as author Alan Cleaver brings to life the extraordinary postal routes of rural Cumbria.
For generations, postmen and women walked — and sometimes cycled — up to 20 miles a day across some of the county’s most beautiful yet challenging terrain, delivering letters six days a week in all weathers. In this fascinating 45-minute talk in our Auditorium, Alan will map these historic routes (all now public paths) and share the stories of the dedicated individuals who kept communities connected long before the age of instant messaging.
As part of this special event, we’ll also explore a unique local connection: artist Percy Kelly’s time working in the postal service. Members of Tullie’s curatorial team will bring selected works out on display in the Reading Room, offering a rare opportunity to view these pieces up close.
You’ll also have the chance to purchase Alan’s new book, The Postal Paths, on the day — with copies available for signing after the talk.
