Dutch guitarist/composer Timon Koomen and Syrian kanun player/singer Shaza Manla have merged powers under the name Ayita where they create a uniqe musical experience. Culture Shock is a platform for new cross-cultural musical collaborations by De Voorkamer curated by Yank. It facilitates artistic and social experiences where musicians from different cultural backgrounds are invited to create together for the first time prepare a unique experience and bring it on stage. Every month a fresh duo debuts their live performance.

_TIMON KOOMEN

Timon Koomen (1989) is a versatile guitarist with a great penchant for improvisation. He started his musical career at the age of 7 playing acoustic guitar but was really captivated by the instrument when he switched to the electric version. In 2011 he graduated from the Conservatory in Utrecht with among others Wim Bronnenberg and Eef Albers and continued his studies at the Conservatory in Amsterdam with among others Maarten v/d Grinten and Jesse van Ruller. Before and during his studies he played in many bands and developed as a versatile guitarist active in many musical styles.

He is currently active in the jazz trio Kapok plays in Nunq and many other projects. He is also active as a composer.

_SHAZA MANLA

Shaza Manla is a Syrian kanun player based in the Netherlands. Throughout her life she had traveled and brought with her a suitcase of musical influences to be unpacked Arabic Turkish and Egyptian music. Shaza now experiments with different sounds mixing her traditional middle-eastern kanun with other music genres and/or traditions as well as using her musicality to tell stories important to her combining her own poetry with music and spoken word.
