About this Event

Palliative Care NSW invites you to join us as we take a look at what it means to provide culturally appropriate care for people living with life limiting illnesses, their family, and carers.

Our communities are multicultural and we celebrate this diversity in life and in death. People approaching end of life, their families, and their carers deserve our compassion and best care at this most trying time. What is best practise for person-centred care cannot be considered without a cultural lens. As volunteers and health care workers we must rise to this challenge.

Calling palliative care volunteers, nurses, doctors, clinicians, social workers, pastoral carers, GPs, allied health workers, aged care workers - if you work or volunteer in the end of life space or if you have a general interest in it, you are most welcome to join us. Our forum will bring you wisdom on understanding culture and meaning, and how to better provide culturally appropriate care to our diverse communities.

The session will cover:

  • what is culture and what does it look like
  • refugees and asylum seekers
  • customs and cultural practises at end of life, death rituals and
  • providing culturally appropriate palliative and end of life care for our communities.

Presented by Gail Jugow, Training and Education Coordinator, Multicultural Communities Council of Illawarra (MCCI) and Partners in Culturally Appropriate Care (PICAC)
