An online workshop to help build sustainable school food growing projects
About this Event

How can we create community networks to sustain our school food growing spaces? What happens to our crops during school holidays? How do we engage parents, teachers and the wider community and where can we find resources to sustain our projects?

In this interactive webinar, we will be chatting with Zoe from Hackney School of Food, Caroline D'Souza from LEAP London and Rachel Copus from School Food Matters.

Learn about different approaches to working in schools, the power of connecting with local networks, community centers and your council. Learn about sustainable funding streams and how to engage parents, volunteers, and the wider community in support of your food growing aspirations.

We will also have time to answer your questions and allow time to share your own experiences and challenges.

The Superzones training series is funded by The GLA, who are working with Capital Growth, London’s largest food growing network, to develop support for schools and community-based food growers within superzone areas.

About the speakers:

Rachel Copus - School Food Matters

Rachel Copus is Partnerships and Programmes Officer at School Food Matters, whose mission is to teach children about food and to improve children’s access to healthy, sustainable food during their time at school. They provide fully funded food education programmes to schools, which are devised with partners. Their food growing work includes small grants for schools, training in food growing in schools and enterprise projects engaging children and young people in creating, marketing and selling their harvests.

Caroline D'Souza - LEAP London

Caroline D’Souza is the founder and director of LEAP London CIC, a brent based organisation. LEAP’s initiatives have a strong focus on wellbeing, learning and community cohesiveness. They partner with organisations across the sectors of education, health and community, to design bespoke projects, that meet local need and respond to local issues.

Much focus of LEAP’s work has been on developing sustainable environmental projects across primary schools in Brent, through repurposing unused areas into green biodiverse growing spaces. Recent initiatives, Wild in Brent and Wilder in Brent funded by Heritage Lottery fund and the GLA have enabled children with the least access to green space to attend regular workshops to create edible gardens and wildflower areas for their school community.
