The Buddha taught a path by which people can realize enlightenment and freedom. One of the three pillars of this path is the practice of meditation, which involves a systematic exploration and training of the mind. In addition to its widely known benefits, meditation offers a means to access some refined states of consciousness beyond our mundane understanding of reality.
Many people who have been inspired to start practicing some form of meditation soon discover that training the mind is not quite as easy as they expected. However, if we approach meditation with the right attitude, we will see it as an indispensable refuge. It only requires that we take some time for introspection, observe the nature of the mind, teach it to abandon its constant preoccupation with habitually ‘thinking about stuff,’ and cultivate greater awareness, stillness, and silence. Gradually, we begin to experience deep inner peace and clarity. It is here that insight and understanding arises. We then begin to see how the mind creates the “world we live in” and that we can choose what we create.
This workshop will include both teachings and practice with ample opportunity for Q&A.
It will encourage:
*Deep and complete relaxation of the body
*Moving from the preoccupation with *Doing to experiencing more Being
*Relaxing into the natural flow of the breath to cultivate greater stillness and silence
*Noticing the impermanent nature of all continued experience
*Finding refuge in that silent present moment awareness that is always Here and Now

John Cianciosi was born in Italy and educated in Australia. In 1972, he was ordained a Buddhist monk in Thailand and trained under one of that country’s most gifted and influential meditation masters, the late Venerable Ajahn Chah. While living in remote jungle monasteries, he led a disciplined, celibate life devoted to the practice of mental cultivation. This unique experience fostered his profound appreciation for the meditative path. Later, he was appointed abbot of Wat Pah Nanachat, the International Forest Monastery established to provide training for the growing number of Ajahn Chah’s Western disciples. In 1982, he was asked to establish a Buddhist monastery in Perth, Western Australia. For the next 14 years, he was instrumental in successfully establishing Bodhinyana Monastery and Dhammaloka Buddhist Centre. As abbot and spiritual director of the Buddhist Society of Western Australia, Cianciosi was responsible for the training of monks and teaching in the lay community.
In 1995 he left the monastic life and moved to the Chicago, Illinois area, where he continues to share his insights and wisdom. He is the author of The Meditative Path and is currently the Director of public programs at the Theosophical Society in America.
