Cultivate: Land Technologies, Stories and Dance Traditions
Join LA Commons and choreographer and South Los Angeles native Bernard Brown for a walk through the Historic Leimert Park neighborhood, mindfulness engagement, and traditional Africanist movement. Intentionally held on George Washington Carver Day, honoring the legacy of the innovator, agricultural scientist and educator, “Cultivate,” is born of the Ghanaian concept of Sankofa (bringing good things from the past forward with us into our future) and seeks to honor our ancestors, specifically those who tilled the land, through memory work.
Starting at Crop Swap LA’s Degnan Microfarm and ending at Plant Chica, interact with local flora, engage in mindful movement, and experience a culminating dance performance. This event is part of LA Commons' community hub programming, We Are the Harvest, as part of PST ART: Art & Science Collide.
- Walk starts at 9:30AM at Crop Swap LA, 3753 Degnan Blvd.
(We are at capacity for our guided walk, but you are welcome to join us for the culminating dance performance)
- Dance performance starts at 11:45AM at Plant Chica, 4311 Degnan Blvd.
Capacity
The walk is limited to 25 participants. The dance performance is open to all. Feel free to register for both or one of the free programs.
