In this workshop:
In a world filled with diverse perspectives and experiences, building understanding and meaningful connections is more important than ever. This workshop is designed to help participants strengthen their ability to engage with others, even when differences arise. We’ll focus on how to bridge gaps, encourage empathy, and foster more compassionate, open conversations.
In this session, we will explore:
- How different perspectives can actually make our conversations richer,
- Why we sometimes get stuck when trying to communicate across differences, and
- Simple, powerful ways to shift the conversation and connect more authentically.
We’ll break it down with a bit of brain science and some practical tips from cognitive behavioral techniques, so we can discuss why conversations sometimes hit a wall—and how to push through. By the end of this session, you’ll have a fresh perspective on how to approach tough conversations, feel more confident in your ability to communicate, and be ready to embrace the power of connection—even with people “on the other side.”
About the Presenter:
I received my Masters in Social Work from UMB in 2002. Working on my degree in the wake of September 11th was one of the key things that first sparked my interest in conflict resolution. Noting the racial profiling that amped up after this tragic event along with the divisiveness I witnessed within the diverse demographic groups in Baltimore throughout the period of time that I worked there as a social worker in the early 2000s I sought additional training in conflict resolution, community organizing and other means of supporting people in using their voices more effectively.
Living overseas and being married to person from another country taught me a great deal about the myriad misunderstandings that can impact relationships when we are not aware of cultural difference. Thus, this work is both relevant to me professionally and personally. With increasing intensity after each of the last 3 elections, I have been saddened by the strengthening polarization of our bipartisan political system. Along with the powerful algorithms that exist within social media platforms, which continue to push us into "silos" of only receiving one version of the "truth," I myself have felt powerless and am seeking to do something that can help us to regain hope and to work towards re-unifying our communities - one conversation at a time.
