Years after escaping from an icy torture chamber in an abandoned slaughterhouse, Lucie enlists the help of her closest friend, Anna, to track down the family who tormented her and exact her revenge. But as Lucie and Anna dig deeper, they discover that they’ve only scratched the surface of an unspeakably vile secret organization.
French horror films are unique in many ways; they are both rare and highly original, always relying on a strong dramatic foundation and high production values. Martyrs (not in the religious sense, but referring to someone determined to endure pain in the quest for truth) combines horror of the most visceral nature with a heartbreaking story of trauma and abuse that grips you by the throat.
The screening will be introduced by Dani van Duin, who recently completed her studies in Film and Literature, focusing on the female approach in a genre that remains male-dominated and exploitative.
