Cult Movie Mondays Pride Month: Beautiful Thing
🏳️🌈 Pride Month at TicTic - Celebrating Queer Cinema 🏳️⚧️
🗓 Monday, June 15 | ⏰ Doors: 6PM | 🎬 Film: 8PM | 📍 TicTic, Phnom Penh
Directed by Hettie Macdonald and adapted from Jonathan Harvey’s play, Beautiful Thing is a warm and quietly radical coming-of-age story set on a South London council estate during the 1990s. The film follows teenagers Jamie and Ste as their friendship slowly develops into first love against the backdrop of working-class family life, neighbour disputes, and the sounds of Cass Elliot drifting through open windows.
Unlike many queer films of its era, Beautiful Thing refuses tragedy or sensationalism, instead presenting queer love with tenderness, humour, and everyday realism. Its depiction of class, community, and acceptance has made it an enduring landmark of British queer cinema. As part of TicTic’s Pride Month celebration of queer cinema, the film remains a rare example of queer storytelling centred on joy, vulnerability, and ordinary life rather than spectacle.
“One of the sweetest and most humane British films of the 1990s.”
— Mark Kermode
“A tender, funny and deeply compassionate film.”
