A washed-up ex–baseball player in 1990s New York gets dragged into the underworld over something as stupid as a neighbour’s cat. Darren Aronofsky’s adaptation of Charlie Huston’s pulp novel is part urban nightmare, part black comedy — a bruised, neon-lit spiral of bad decisions and worse people. Austin Butler gives a live-wire performance as a man losing his grip on morality and sanity in equal measure. Gritty, surreal, and darkly funny, Caught Stealing feels like After Hours reimagined by a feverish Coen brother.
