About this Event
Join us at the Green Farmacy Garden on second Saturdays for Monthly Herbal Medicine Making!
Do you know which group of herbs have withstood the test of time and always been at hand?
Even through the waves of domestication, consumerism, and modern medicine, do you know the herbal allies that have always been by our side?
The ones with a deep, gentle power about them to nourish and heal us, even unknowingly?
The ones our ancestors reached for by pure instinct, even when they didn’t know they needed their healing?
The Culinary Herbs
Sage, thyme, rosemary, oregano & garlic, among others, have been in kitchens and homemade recipes for ages.
Even when generations stepped away from nature and shied away from plant medicine, these herbs have always been a staple in kitchens and cooking around the globe.
Did you know rosemary is beneficial to the memory & cognitive functions? That oregano promotes a healthy heart and thyme supports our respiratory system?
We'll take a stroll through the garden to meet the culinary herbs and discuss their medicinal properties and growing habits. We'll talk about when to harvest the herbs, proper methods to do so, and take turns harvesting some culinary herbs to make remedies together. We will then explore healing herbal kitchen remedies to be incorporated into everyday cooking, as well as preparations to work with during times of illness. Each participant will take home a small sample jar of an herbal infused oil or vinegar prepared during class.
Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food!

A notebook and writing utensil if you use them.
If you have one, a harvest basket or bag to harvest our culinary herbs

Located in Fulton, Maryland, The Green Farmacy Garden is a sanctuary for approximately 300 native and non-native species of plants that have been used traditionally and/or researched for medicinal applications. USDA botanist James A. Duke, PhD, and his wife, Peggy, collected medicinal plants for over sixty years. In 1997, they transformed part of their pasture land into a teaching garden highlighting the plants that are featured in Jim’s book, The Green Ph*rm*cy.
The Green Farmacy Garden is also a part of the United Plant Savers network of sanctuaries around the country, which strive to educate the public and maintain native plant species that have become at risk or endangered.
In 2022, The Green Farmacy Garden became a sister site of Freetown Farm, part of the Community Ecology Institute based in Columbia, Maryland. The legacy gardeners are delighted and honored to have the garden continuously cared for as an educational garden & community space, and be a part of the fundamental ecological & educational community work of local non-profit The Community Ecology Institute.
