On Wednesday 16 April, Cuculi presents queer folk duo Lucy and Hazel at St Anne's Church (Greenbank), with support from activist folk songwriter Claire Vine. Hailing from Sheffield and inspired by English & European traditional music, Lucy Huzzard and Hazel Thompson write raw modern folk songs with gloriously defiant lyrics and sublime vocal harmonies, embodying their heartfelt resistance to oppression of all forms. We're delighted to welcome them back to Bristol in the wake of their new EP 'What Was Stolen' (out 20 February), and they'll also be offering a workshop the previous day (Tues 15th April) in conjunction with Greenbank Folk Club (ticketed separately).

We ask that those who make more than £25k per year consider opting for Community Supporter as this allows us to subsidise low income tickets.. We consider low income to apply to those who earn less than £15k per year, but we don’t ask for any proof.

Lucy and Hazel are a Sheffield-based queer folk duo charming audiences with self penned folk laced with humour, harmonies and heartache. With influences drawn from a lifetime steeped in traditional English and European folk music, song and dance, Lucy Huzzard and Hazel Thompson combine a love of groove, soulful raw harmonies and passionate song writing to give you hope in these strange times.
On melodeon, clarinet, guitar and two distinct and powerful voices, Lucy and Hazel’s set will take you on a journey through themes of land and climate justice, feminism, apocalypse, power and platonic love. With inspirations spanning from Joni Mitchell and Ivor Cutler, to stories of resistance to injustice, they are a powerful and entertaining folk duo on the scene.

CLAIRE VINE
Emerging alt-folk artist Claire Vine is fast gaining a reputation for writing songs that sound like they've always existed. She has a knack for condensing urgent political and social commentary into concise, uncompromising moments of raw beauty. Her debut EP Tunnel was released in December 2020, comprising six original songs, between them all a thread of honest observations about the state of the world.
Unashamedly political and poignantly personal, her songs are inspired by protest movements, the refugee crisis and her longing for justice in a more sustainable world. Her lyrics are at once a call to action and a space for contemplation, blending passion and pragmatism in each memorable song. Claire is currently writing her debut album, to be recorded with producer Sid Goldsmith and released in 2025.

Cuculi Records is a DIY label based in Bristol, run by a woman-led collective of musicians and songwriters with the aim of helping grassroots artists navigate the complexities of releasing music independently. We work with bedroom composers, folk singers, ambient explorers and unusual ensembles, often creating beautiful sounds that don't have a name yet.
Cuculi Presents is an opportunity to hear both local & national artists live in listening spaces around Bristol.
