CSU and City of Fort Collins - Structural Tree Pruning Workshop 2025

This tree pruning workshop will provide a unique opportunity for arborists, urban foresters, and other tree care professionals to advance their knowledge and sharpen their skills related to tree pruning through a combination of classroom learning and hands-on field experience.

Many people accept that improved tree structure is a desirable goal for tree pruning work. But what does that mean exactly? And how can you apply general pruning concepts to unique trees?

In this half-day workshop, you will learn alongside seasoned experts about current best practices for structural tree pruning. First, we will review essential concepts about tree biology and pruning techniques to develop a common understanding and vocabulary for the work. Afterwards, participants will have an opportunity to prune small trees using course concepts and receive valuable feedback from their peers.

After participating in the course, you can expect to be able to:

- recognize and demonstrate proper pruning cuts,

- anticipate common tree responses to pruning,

- describe ideal branch structure for young trees, and

- propose pruning treatments to improve tree structure.

CEUs will be available for ISA credential holders.
