About this Event

Type 1L Concrete
The Road We Are On - Working with 1L Low Carbon Concrete

Join CSI Nashville during the 2026 Nashville CSI Product Show for an educational seminar focused on the transition to Type 1L Portland Limestone Cement and the design and construction considerations that come with lower-carbon concrete.

Type 1L concrete can reduce greenhouse gas emissions during cement production by approximately 10% to 15% because its lower clinker content requires less fossil-fuel energy during manufacturing. However, the change in cement composition can also affect water demand, early-age strength development, initial set time, finishing operations, and overall concrete performance.

This program examines practical strategies for designing and working with Type 1L low-carbon concrete, including the use of admixtures and topical treatments to help address reduced early-age strength gain. The session also discusses the importance of regional differences in material availability and performance and provides strategies designers and contractors can use to improve quality and reduce project risk.

Learning Objectives
  1. Explain the differences between traditional Type I Portland cement and Type 1L low-carbon Portland Limestone Cement, including differences in limestone percentages and ASTM testing between mixes.
  2. Identify environmental and construction factors that contribute to concrete cracking, surface defects, and durability issues, including how lower clinker content can influence early-age strength development depending on mix design.
  3. Evaluate quality-control measures that can improve low-carbon concrete performance, including chemical densifiers and hardeners, colloidal silica topical treatments, accelerators, and water-reducing admixtures.
  4. Apply specification and construction-coordination strategies that help minimize project risk, including consideration of premature or delayed finishing operations and aggressive troweling practices that can negatively affect concrete finish and color.
