Essential Components in a Tile Specification
A comprehensive presentation on architectural ceramic tile specification highlighting their types, technical advantages, sustainability certifications and documentation, and best practices for installation. This session will also address common challenges and solutions to ensure high-quality tile installations.
Analyzing the 3-Part Specification
Part 1 – General: Key elements to include in the General Conditions to ensure clarity and completeness. Sustainability, tests, mockups. Specifying Floor Flatness and solutions for flatness failures.
Part 2 – Products: Essential product details and specifications to prevent omissions and reduce RFIs from the job site. Guidelines to prescriptive and proprietary specifications. Explore various types, technical strengths, and sustainability product offerings that need to be specified.
Part 3 – Execution: Strategies to prevent ceramic tile installation failures, achieve a clean finish, and ensure a long-lasting floor or wall installation. Highlights on missing items and why they are essential. Discussion on how to mitigate grout haze, shadowing and picture framing.
Presenter:
Shamanna Kelamangalam is a results-driven professional with 21 years’ experience in the application of ceramic and porcelain tiles for commercial projects. He specialises in solution-based selling and possesses strong technical knowledge of premium, luxury, and valued added products and services. Shamanna has collaborated with major architectural firms across Canada on award winning and landmark sustainability projects. His in-depth understanding of sustainability has enabled him to navigate challenges in specifying products for LEED certified projects. By aligning the technical strengths of ceramic tiles with LEED requirements, he has successfully contributed to major sustainable developments. A graduate of Life Sciences and a WELL Accredited Professional, Shamanna focuses on health and wellness in building design. He has been a Certified Technical Representative (CTR) since 2012, deepening his expertise in LEED and sustainable building practices. Currently, he serves as the Director of Architectural Sales at Holten Impex International and is a part-time faculty member at George Brown College. He teaches Specification and Document courses to interior design students and construction industry professionals through the CSC Toronto Chapter.
