CRYSTAL HELL
9 November | The Ballery, Berlin
A special installation marking a new direction for The Ballery.
On 9 November, The Ballery opens its doors to a new kind of experience. Crystal Hell brings together light, darkness, reflections and shattered illusions in an immersive installation that invites visitors to step into another world.
Playing with the contrasting meanings of hell in English and German, the installation explores beauty, contradiction and the people society leaves behind.
This marks a new chapter for The Ballery, moving beyond the traditional gallery format towards a more experimental space for ideas, installations and live experiences.
One evening. A different Ballery.
9 November is a date that carries its own contradictions in German history. Kristallnacht, the pogrom of 1938, when Jewish homes, businesses and synagogues were attacked and the streets were covered in broken glass. Fifty-one years later, on 9 November 1989, the Berlin Wall fell. One date, two very different moments in history. Destruction, division and liberation.
Today, we live behind another kind of wall. Screens surround us, consume our attention and shape the way we see ourselves and each other. What happens when that wall breaks?
Crystal Hell imagines the screen exploding, the person breaking free and the fragments becoming something else. Blood-red tears, crystal shards, reflections and light.
It is also about those society rejects. The unwanted, the discarded, the people left to rot. The scapegoats. Those treated as if they are worth nothing.
What if the people we discard are the ones who will dazzle?
The crystal myth is breaking.
