Tour the sculpture on the water:
If you would like to tour the sculpture by kayak or row boat, we will be allowing 25 guests to take out boats from Fox Point for free during the event (weather permitting) on a first come first serve basis. To expedite your registration, please visit the UMass Boston Recreation website and register as a guest to log in and fill out the waiver.

About the project:
perfect memory is a public art installation on the ocean of Dorchester Bay by Boston-based artist crystal bi, produced during their participation in the Triennial’s Public Art Accelerator program, and complimented by a wide ranging set of public programs and an extended solo-exhibition at the University Hall Gallery. Inspired by Toni Morrison’s resonant quote, that “all water has perfect memory,” bi has created a sculpture and series of public engagements that invite viewers to, in their words, “give gratitude to those that have dreamed us here and explore our own dreams for the future.”
The artwork takes form as a sculpture, a floating raft made of metal, plastic floats, marine flag fabric, rope, and bamboo. A combination of contemporary and ancient building materials, the structure engages with the Taiwanese traditions of building and floating lanterns and bamboo rafts to honor ancestors during the Ghost Festival. bi will be traveling to Taiwan this August to experience first-hand this ritual that has inspired her work. perfect memory offers our audiences chances to honor our ancestors and passed loved ones, to connect with diasporic traditions and rituals, and engage with memory as an emotive and creative act.
