About Crysede: Iconic Imagemakers:
During the 1920s and 1930s, Crysede brought high quality textile design and manufacture to a new money international clientele, first in Newlyn, then in St Ives, and finally, during the late 1940s and early 1950s, in Hayle.
The beautiful designs of silk manufacturer and artist Alec Walker were printed onto English silk using the woodblock printing process. The clothes were sold through the company’s own outlets around the country, and overseas through mail order.
Crysede was a major employer in West Cornwall and, at a time of high unemployment, provided several generations of young local women with valuable dress-making skills.
The exhibition, which will include Crysede garments, original art works, textile samples, photographs, oral history recordings, and other pieces will help centre this unique business in its wider cultural and artistic context.
