Gaby Hurtado-Ramos will be showing prints from their Gay Houston and Gay Bars series, a group of prints and a zine drawing from queer bars and clubs of the past and present. Hurtado-Ramos works with archival images of historic gay bars as well as gestural drawings and prints from moments in party spaces. They use risography, monotype, screenprint, and other print media to make image and text-based work asking what it means to feel yearning, hopeful, and full of desire while the world feels like it is crumbling.
Anáhuac: Multidisciplinary artist led pop up space, using mesoamerican arts and culture to connect to self, community and the land.
Seattle-based artist Natalie Woodlock will be screening Ang Lee’s 2005 film Brokeback Mountain. She has been organizing screenings down the West Coast, and through the Southwest and Texas, at gay bars, cinemas, art centers and third spaces. She hands out handkerchiefs at the beginning of the film, and afterwards asks viewers to write down the scenes that made them cry. She embroiders the names of each person who sheds tears on their handkerchief, and illustrates each scene that brings viewers to tears for an artists’ book she is making. This project highlights the connective possibility and collective power of film, and its potential to transform the cinema into a site of communal exchange between audience members. By illustrating the scenes from Brokeback Mountain that bring viewers to tears, she aims to memorialize the circle of sympathy present at each screening in the pages of each book.
Friends Gallery is volunteer, grassroots space that centers trans, queer, bipoc, and all oppressed peoples in the struggle for liberation in so-called Houston, Texas. https://friendsgalleryhtx.cargo.site
