Crossroads of our Buried History: A walking tour and pop-up exhibition
About this Event
You are warmly invited to join communities from East London, staff from St George-in-the-East and archaeologists from UCL Archaeology South-East to help map out a new trail from Whitechapel Town Hall to St George-in-the-East Church in Shadwell. Our walk will take around an hour, but we've given ourselves time at the end to ask questions and share news of upcoming projects.
Together we will share stories about people, places and events linked to the often-overlooked presence of people of African origin in 18th, 19th and early 20th century London and the long history of a much wider tradition of East End solidarity.
Our research and memories will be recorded and added to a collection on Layers of London. Please get in touch with the organisers if you want to suggest a stop or a story along the route.
Trigger warning: some events and sources that will be discussed include episodes that are upsetting, and language that may be triggering, inaccurate and offensive.
This event is part of Being Human Festival, the UK’s national festival of the humanities, taking place 5-14 November 2026. Being Human is led by the School of Advanced Study, University of London in partnership with the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the British Academy.
