About this Event

The exchange is part of a series of cross-sector Community Learning Exchanges that provides members of Scottish Community Alliance's (SCA) network - including DTAS members - with cross-sector learning opportunities, improving the resilience of the wider network and their practices through skill advancement and capacity building.

This particular exchange will be hosted by Edinburgh Old Town Development Trust on the topic of ‘Supporting the Next Generation of Community Workers’.

Your visit will be fully funded by the National Lottery Community Fund and the Scottish Community Alliance. More information below.

Exchange description

This exchange will provide you with the opportunity to learn how to work with, develop, and utilise the skills of the next generation of community workers. This exchange will provide insight and advice into placements, courses, and different approaches to learning, as well as the challenges facing future community work.

Learning outcomes

  • Thinking about different ways that community development workers/projects can support people to get involved in the profession
  • Navigating potential issues and challenges that present a threat to the future of community development
  • Considering the future and adopting different ideas and approaches to create a stronger CLD network

Who is this exchange for?

Anyone who is employed by or volunteers for a community organisation that is a member of DTAS and/or a member of one of the 28 networks that comprise the Scottish Community Alliance.

To enable as many organisations to attend as possible, we are capping attendance at two people per organisation.

Where is this event taking place?

The Crannie, 9 Cranston Street, Edinburgh, EH8 8BE

Do I have to pay to attend?

No. This exchange is fully funded.

Thanks to National Lottery players, Locality has received almost £1.9 million over three years from The National Lottery Community Fund, the largest community funder in the UK.

The funding will support the Connectors UK programme, delivered in partnership with DTA Scotland, DTA Wales and DT Northern Ireland. Through the programme we will bring local community organisations together, to build resilience, share innovative practice and shape their community’s future.

The exchange is also funded by the Community Learning Exchange fund, distributed by the Scottish Community Alliance.

What is funded?

Travel and/or mileage costs can be expensed. If you need to travel two hours or more (one way) in order to attend, we will pay up to £100 for accommodation and up to £25 subsistence per day.

We will provide expense forms to all attendees once the event has taken place and reimburse costs. Make sure to hold onto all receipts as these will need to be submitted with your expense form.

Please note, by signing up to this event you agree to your name and organisational details being shared with the Scottish Community Alliance.

About Edinburgh Old Town Development Trust and The Crannie Community Hub

Edinburgh Old Town Development Trust was founded in 2009. Their mission is to provide community for the residents of the Old Town. Their vision is a vibrant, welcoming and sustainable Old Town for everyone who lives here. The Crannie Community Hub is a welcoming community space in the heart of Old Town, run by Edinburgh Old Town Development Trust. We have three rooms that we use for a regular programme of free and accessible activities, and lease for meetings, workshops and events. We also have a cosy 'living room' space where people are welcome to gather whenever we are open for teas and coffees, chat and to borrow books and board games. We have a regular zero waste pantry that people can access, and are a hub for LGBT Youth Scotland, who use the centre in the evenings for youth groups.

Accessibility

General Access

There is a lower-ground entrance for the public. On the upper level, there is another street-level entrance, which will nominally be shut, unless for certain occasions, ie: events in the Village Hall space and for accessible disabled access.

Car Parking

Car parking is limited due to the proximity of The Crannie to the Old Town and city centre. East Market Street does have a small paid parking bay. Waverley Station is the closest large parking complex.

The Crannie is most easily accessed by the number 35 Lothian buses route. It is also a short walk from Edinburgh Waverley Train Station.

Disabled Access

Both entrances are accessible via a removable ramp.

There are gender neutral accessible toilets available on both floors.
