About this course

The course is intended to teach absolute beginners how to take their first steps in crochet.

We will focus on the topics outlined below, as these are essential for beginners to learn.

Throughout the course, we will look at:

  • How to hold the crochet hook
  • How to hold the yarn to maintain yarn tension
  • How to make a chain
  • How to make basic crochet stitches (chain, double, treble and half-treble)
  • How to crochet in a circle
  • How to read a pattern (in both UK and US formats)
  • Simple crochet projects including strips, squares and circles
  • Brief History of Crochet and its cultural expressions
  • By the end of the course learners will know how to take their interest in crochet further

Learners will:

  • Develop a way of working with the crochet hook and yarn which suits them
  • Have practised making chains and working stitches into them
  • Make basic crochet stitches including: chain, double, treble and half-treble stitches
  • Crochet in a circle
  • Be able to read and follow a simple crochet pattern
  • Undertake simple crochet projects including different crochet stitches, lines, squares and circles
  • Know how to take their interest in crochet further.
  • If you are already proficient in these, you may wish to consider taking a more advanced crochet course.

Learners need to bring their own Crochet Hook, and Yarn. I recommend that for the early part of the course at least you use a larger hook 4.00 or 5.00 mm (preferably soft grip) and thicker smooth ‘chunky’ yarn as you need to be able to see the stitches you will be making clearly.

Suitable hooks can be obtained online and from Hobby Craft and should cost no more than £4.

Yarn should be available from various outlets in person and online including some charity shops and general retail outlets such as Boyes.
