We missed the Sandwich Library events, and we are happy to announce that together with the French Institute, we are preparing the Culture Capsules series, a micro-platform in which we will debate with our guests the future of audiovisual media, literature, or artistic events.
We are waiting for you on April 20, 2024, at 2 p.m., for our inaugural discussion, titled 'CRITIQUE DE CINÉMA, (PAS) UN MÉTIER,' moderated by Victor Morozov and featuring French film critic and academic Pierre Jendrysiak.

? A few words about the talk
”The question of the place of film criticism in society has been continuously debated since its inception. As we navigate through a new era in the history of the audiovisual industry, this activity appears at once fragile, contested, and necessary. Our everyday environment is inundated with a myriad of images, prompting the need for constant interventions and speculations at the core of this novel imagery. Therefore, we have chosen to reassess the role of criticism and its inherent attributes — a realm of possibilities that remains largely unexplored, awaiting unraveling and reconstruction, despite the proliferation of 'histories' tracing the profession's trajectory. Technological and societal advancements have facilitated a fresh perspective on the past.

Joined by Pierre Jendrysiak, a film critic for the French magazine Débordements and a teacher-researcher, we will explore this question from a contemporary standpoint, primarily within the French-speaking milieu but not limited to it. In the era of #metoo, artificial intelligence, and the perpetual evolution of technical images, what role can film criticism and cinephilia play? How do we navigate away from nostalgia without succumbing to relativism? Perhaps a more precise term would be a critique of the audiovisual sector, encompassing the entire landscape of our dynamic industry.”- Victor Morozov

? Bios
Pierre Jendrysiak - Film critic and Academic. Member of the editorial board of Débordements and contributor to AOC (Analyse, opinion, critique). Teaches film studies at the University of Lille. Took part in the first workshop on film criticism organized by the Porto/Post/Doc documentary festival (2023).
Victor Morozov - Film critic. Currently undertaking his doctoral studies at Trinity College Dublin University, with a focus on television images of the Romanian Revolution. Co-founder of the blog FuturEast, which aims to promote Romania's Eastern European (cultural, geographical, social) space. Film critic for the publications Dilema Veche and Scena9, and one of the editors of the specialist publication Films in Frame.
