Another chance to unite the masses 9/24/21!
Critical Mass Austin invites people that ride bicycles and other forms of alternative transportation to celebrate the city’s improvements in infrastructure while helping to increase visibility for the improved safety of all road users.
We are grateful and proud that Austin is ranked in the top 20 best cities for bicycling and 6th in acceleration for continued improvements.
Anyone from any group around is welcome to join including those that ride bicycles, electric unicycles, onewheels, inlines, roller skates, and skateboards.
Arrive early to get to know everyone – we will depart exactly at 7:32 PM!
Plan to leave late + bring your lights, and good vibes to join the celebratory dance/skate after party at our end location with DJ Donavin Valez from The Underground Atx!
MEETING LOCATION 1 (~11 MILES TO END):
Edward Rendon Sr. Metro Park (15 Chicon St, ATX 78702)
MID-STOP: HEB (2508 E Riverside Dr, Austin, TX 78741)
ENDING LOCATION:
Edward Rendon Sr. Metro Park (15 Chicon St, ATX 78702)
Routes from start to finish will be mostly flat, have no expected gravel, and are less than 12 miles round trip.
All are expected to take personal responsibility for abiding by traffic laws and potential exposure to airborne illnesses.
MISSION STATEMENT:
Critical Mass Austin strives to demonstrate support for the Austin Transportation Department’s focus on creating mobility infrastructure improvements by organizing monthly multi-modal celebrations. Our goal is to foster community and maintain awareness for people that ride bicycles and other alternative modes of transportation so that safety is increased for all.
RIDE RULES:
1. Respect yourself, each other, other road users, parks, waterways, and local organizations.
2. Do not swerve into oncoming traffic, stay to the right side of the road, call out hazards, and do not litter while riding or at mid-stops.
3. Keep crosswalks clear so people walking can pass.
4. Help newbies out – a simple “Stay to the right” is often enough to inform or remind someone they are slipping.
5. Let the leader lead and set the pace. Keep a safe distance from the leader.
6. Don’t harass others and keep personal drama to yourself.
7. Report harassment to any organizer or ride leader.
8. Follow the rules. Offenders will get one warning. A second offense will result in expulsion from the group and all future events.
RIDE FORMAT:
1. We do not swerve into oncoming traffic. We stay to the right side of the road; call slowing and check for safe crossing at all stop signs. We aim to follow traffic laws whenever possible but prioritize group safety.
2. We do not stop and wait for mechanical issues to be resolved. Please ensure your equipment is in good working order before arriving and be prepared with a plan on how to get to your next destination safely if you must break off from the ride. Attend with a friend!
3. Routes are tested in advance, are an average of 8-10 miles, and have a mid-stop near a store with drinks and snacks.
4. Corner Volunteers work together to empower us to follow traffic laws and help the group stay together even when temporarily split up due to traffic lights at busy intersections or consecutive turns. They do this by:
*Posting up in the right-side corner on the sidewalk at intersections
*Calling out "stopping" to allow right of way traffic to pass *Calling out "stopping" when traffic lights turn red
*Waiting and pointing the direction of the route until one of the identified Sweep Volunteers releases them from their post
