About this Event

Join the Department of Foreign Policy & Global Security, the Asean & Indo-Pacific Studies Initiative (AIPSI), and the Asia Foundation for a task force report, Critical Issues for the United States in Southeast Asia in 2025. This report is based on an eight-month series of discussions that ranged from economic relations, climate change policy, energy, and maritime security to how to support ASEAN and promote democracy, human rights, and good governance in the region. This report provides analysis and recommendations for the new U.S. administration and Congress that will take office in January 2025. Please join us for this critical conversation.


Speakers:

Ambassador Piper Campbell

Bio: Piper Campbell is the Chair of the Department of Foreign Policy and Global Security at the School of International Service at American University. She has a distinguished 30-year diplomatic career and is a former U.S. Ambassador to Mongolia.


Ambassador Scot Marciel

Bio: Scot Marciel (Cochair) is the Oksenberg-Rohlen Fellow at the Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center at Stanford University. He previously served for many years as a U.S. diplomat, including as Ambassador to Indonesia, Myanmar, and for ASEAN Affairs.


Mr. Hunter Marston

Bio: Hunter Marston is a PhD candidate in International Relations at Australian National University in the Coral Bell School of Asia-Pacific Affairs, an Adjunct Research Fellow at La Trobe Asia with La Trobe University in Melbourne, and an Associate with 9DashLine. His research focuses on hedging and security alignment in Southeast Asia and U.S. foreign policy.


Mrs. Courtney Weatherby

Bio: Mrs. Courtney Weatherby is a Fellow and Deputy Director with the Stimson Center’s Southeast Asia and Energy, Water, and Sustainability Programs. She has over 10 years of experience addressing sustainable development in the Indo-Pacific, with particular attention to the water-energy-food nexus in the Mekong region.


Ambassador Ted Osius

Bio: Ted Osius is the President and CEO of the U.S.-ASEAN Business Council. Founded in 1984, the Council represents 180 of the largest American businesses in Southeast Asia through its headquarters in Washington, D.C., and its seven regional offices. A diplomat for 30 years, Ambassador Osius served from 2014 to 2017 as U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam and serves on the Board of The Asia Foundation.
