Mahler’s final completed symphony is a farewell to life. His vulnerability, felt throughout the entire work, gives way to the humor and tumult of the earthly experiences Mahler knew, especially in his youth. As we arrive at the profound silence that closes the symphony, we encounter a composer who has found peace in accepting his fate. This silence in which he leaves us may be the loudest statement Mahler ever made.
