About this Event
Join us for an exciting 2 ½ day program that will raise your understanding of the intricacies of government communication – ESPECIALLY when things go wrong! We’re putting YOU in the PIO driver’s seat!
DAY 1 – For 25 years we have been evolving our practice of HOW we speak as government to the public, and how we work with the media. Especially in emergencies. It is ever changing and evolving, but important that public organizations and private sector companies understand their obligation to communicate effectively in times of crisis.
Spend the day with us examining the theories and the applications of effective crisis communication. In a “Ripped from the Headlines” review, you will learn by dissecting good examples, failures, and opportunities for improvement we have all learned from. We will also review National Incident Management best practices and protocols that prepare you for Day 2.
DAY 2 – TABLETOP Exercise. In a highly regarded tabletop specifically designed for those working in the public affairs role, and the role of the liaison, during a declared crisis or an emergency. It’s a day that is fast paced and has a lot of action, with each participant having an opportunity to serve in one of the key roles in a Joint Information Center (JIC.) You will role-play in every critical function, and serve as the Spokesperson, on camera, with reporters asking YOU the tough questions.
DAY 3 - There is no better teacher than an “after action” roundtable. Let’s review tactics, tools and tips and conduct a mock After Action report out.
YOU WILL LEARN:
What exactly is a “crisis?” Is it in the planning or in the execution of the plan – or both?
Why is it important that a trained professional be our communications strategist for external and internal communication during an incident that threatens life and property?
When does being “first” more advantageous than being “right?” How do we balance those imperatives in crisis communication?
How do you win in the court of public opinion and keep the public’s trust in your agency?
How do you move the needle on engagement through creativity?
What PIOs do is a mixture of “science and art” and is essential for growing public trust in the agency and its leaders. When is it “too much” personality and not enough substance?
