Big Trouble is an instrumental band featuring a significant portion of the band Heiruspecs (Peter, Sean, and Josh) plus Sean’s brother Steve. They have been playing instrumental shows and backing other vocalists for 20ish years.
Crescent Moon is one of the greatest rappers to ever come out of Minnesota, famous for his work with Oddjobs and K*ll the Vultures.
Circa 2007, Sean drove a minidisc player and a minidisc full of new musical ideas from the gents in Big Trouble over to Crescent Moon’s house. Crescent Moon went to work on lyrics. From there, they quickly carved out a beautiful EP full of Big Trouble’s diverse instrumentals blended with Crescent Moon’s powerful lyrics.
In his lyrics, Crescent Moon offers a wide spectrum of emotions. Need some shit talk? No problem. A drinking song that sounds like it was written 100 years on either side of us, future or past? Done. A workaday story told from a completely left field point of view? Check.
That spectrum gives Big Trouble the chance to bring their own wide spectrum in the world of instrumentals. A barren melancholy landscape punctuated by washed out slide guitar? Yes, chef. A lopsided chordal pattern that turns on itself when you least expect it? Hold my coffee. A 5/4 fusion blast with chords that dart around the key center? So glad you asked, yes.
Together, Crescent Moon and Big Trouble carve their own path, finding what works for the unique stories they want to tell with little regard for what a band is supposed to do. They’ve released the aforementioned EP in 2009 and a three-song single, High Hopes, in 2019. The group shows no signs of slowing down or speeding up. The path and pace they’ve chosen has led them into almost two decades of collaboration built on finding the best ways to push themselves and their music where it needs to go when it needs to go there.
For this show, Crescent Moon x Big Trouble will be sharing some new songs they’ve been working on as well as songs from earlier releases. Between day jobs, children, and travel, it’s a very rare thing indeed to catch Crescent Moon and Big Trouble on stage together. We believe you won’t regret making time for it in your busy schedule.
