CREATURES OF BUTTER samler dans, live-percussion og visuelt design i et stærkt kunstnerisk møde mellem Dansk Danseteaters kunstneriske leder Marina Mascarell, percussionisten Ying-Hsueh Chen, billedkunstneren Rasmus Myrup og lysdesigneren Leticia Skrycky.
CREATURES OF BUTTER tager udgangspunkt i en lille, men afslørende detalje hos en af vores mest ikoniske danske billedhuggere, Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen. Som ung pige formede hun dyr ud af smør – blødt, umiddelbart og let at forme. Titlen peger både på materialets skrøbelighed og vitaliteten hos de skabninger, der inspirerede hendes tidlige praksis.
Koreograf Marina Mascarell fortolker Carl-Nielsens vibrerende skulpturelle sprog gennem 10 dansere fra Dansk Danseteater og forvandler scenen til et atelierlignende landskab, hvor proces og transformation forbliver synlige. Forestillingen er en hyldest til Carl-Nielsens værk og mod – modet til at kræve sin plads og arbejde imod forventningernes tyngde.
Forestillingen henter inspiration fra den vitalistiske strømning på Carl-Nielsens tid, hvor kunstnere og tænkere udforskede livet som en usynlig kraft. En tid, hvor Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen skabte kraftfulde og troværdige skulpturer af dyr og væsener — havfruer, køer, heste, påfugle — figurer fyldt med værdighed, vilje og livskraft. I koreografien vækkes skabningerne til live, ikke som statiske monumenter, men som levende væsener i forvandling.
Forestillingen er en co-produktion skabt af Dansk Danseteater & Bora Bora.

ANNE MARIE CARL-NIELSENS SCULPTURES AS DANCE
CREATURES OF BUTTER brings together dance, live percussion, and visual design in a powerful artistic meeting between Dansk Danseteater's artistic director Marina Mascarell, percussionist Ying-Hsueh Chen, visual artist Rasmus Myrup, and lighting designer Leticia Skrycky.
CREATURES OF BUTTER takes its starting point from a small yet revealing detail in the life of one of Denmark's most iconic sculptors, Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen. As a young girl, she shaped animals out of butter – soft, immediate, and easy to mould. The title points both to the fragility of the material and the vitality of the creatures that inspired her early practice.
Choreographer Marina Mascarell interprets Carl-Nielsen's vibrant sculptural language through 10 dancers from Dansk Danseteater, transforming the stage into a studio-like landscape where process and transformation remain visible. The performance is a tribute to Carl-Nielsen's work and courage – the courage to claim her place and work against the weight of expectations.
The performance draws inspiration from the vitalist movement of Carl-Nielsen's time, when artists and thinkers explored life as an invisible force. A time when Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen created powerful and convincing sculptures of animals and beings — mermaids, cows, horses, peacocks — figures filled with dignity, will, and life force. In the choreography, the creatures are brought to life, not as static monuments, but as living beings in transformation.
The performance is a co-production created by Dansk Danseteater & Bora Bora.

The performance can be experienced in Copenhagen at Teater Republique Revolver from 8–17 April 2027, Tuesday–Friday at 7 PM and Saturdays at 3 PM.
